Throwback

I visited some pieces from 8th grade today. Figure since I haven't posted in a while, I'll get lazy and post one now.

I float into the room
White, light, flight
Raucous laughter, questions inquiring
A gust keeps me going
Onward I travel
Across carpets, through floors
Into the wild I escape
Ready to lay my seed
Until another white wind blows
Mother's breath, fast and cold
Forever traveling, always descending
Away I run into the world
Waiting for his grasp, shiny and cool
Drowned forever, forever moving.

Occupy Wall Street?

You know something? I don't really care for the message, the movement, or the debate around Occupy Wall-Street. I just care about the people. It's a movement from the people, by the people, for the people. It inspires me to see thousands of people toughing it out in the winter, relying on each other for not just warmth but strength. It amazes me to see people protesting for their ideas en masse and to stand by those beliefs with such force, vigor, and conviction. It awes me to see people stand their ground despite the powers of the people going against them, the beatings they have taken, the obstructions thrown at them. I hope this movement makes it through the New England winter. It will be our next Valley Forge. It will be remarkable.

A mountain of a dream

I remember in second grade I often had nightmares. Among them included falling off a steep mountain into incoming traffic. I would be climbing, up, up, and up. Rocks would tumble. Gravel would loosen. My hands would slip, and I would fall.

I no longer have this nightmare.

Have I reached the top, or have I lost the dream?

I lied

Okay, so I lied when I said I would get this started again. To be honest, I haven't been able to find the time. Between procrastination, Teamliquid, homework, and college apps, I'm just swamped. I'll start writing more frequently when I get the time. Thank god MEA is coming up. I really need the sleep.

Some thoughts

COZY'S BLOG IS BACK! Visit it at http://quintequences.blogspot.com/

I was thinking about what to write. I stared at the ceiling and saw a black dot. I can't see it anymore. I'm too far away. I need to lie down on my bed, limbs splayed towards the four corners, and stare to find it once more. I like that dot.

Why Emma sucks.

I would say spoiler, but it's a monotonous, pointless book with a plot that's not worth following. If you get spoilered, don't sweat it. I'm just saving your time.

1. Prose. I can't stand Emma's style. Reading Emma might as well have been reading Miss Bates the whole way through. That is, reading rambling, incoherent drivel which makes me wonder, "Why do I care?" But wait, it gets worse. Austen uses archaic constructions forcing 10 words instead of 3. Austen uses elevated diction for little purpose, and while used correctly, it still feels like I'm reading an idiot trying to use a thesaurus to sound "intellectual." Luckily, no one I know writes like that. Thank god.

2. Plot. It's boring. I didn't care. I just tried to get through 471 pages ASAP. It's predictable. Who didn't guess Frank+Jane or Harriet+Robert? I'm quite sure I saw that around 200 pages in. She tries to trick the reader, hehehe, but those were just extraneous words. I'll admit Knightly+Emma was surprising, but that's because they're brother/sister in laws. Doesn't that count for incest? Ugh, too close for comfort though.

3. Characters. I hated them all except the Knightlys. Maybe that's why the plot bored me. I didn't care about the characters, so why should I care about what happens to them? Emma could die of heat stroke, end the book earlier, and I'd be all the happier. Compare this to Pride and Prejudice or Persuasion where I actually cared because the heroine wasn't a pompous, spoiled, immature bonehead, and you'll see why I hated this book. Mrs. Elton signified skim to me, as did Miss Bates, as did Mr. Elton, as did Harriet Smith.

What a waste of time.

The lie and the truth

Sometimes I wonder if I lie to myself enough times, can it become truth? I guess it's best to try it.
It can become truth.
It can become truth.
It can become truth.
...
I'll get back to you on the results.

Getting back into the swing

Writing is like Starcraft. It rusts if you don't use it. It's not hard to grind off most of the rust, but it's hard to reach that previous level. A few practice games might make me high D again, but until I start playing everyday, I'm just going to keep losing D+ games at this rate. No matter. Just need to keep practicing.

Re-start

It's August.

Okay. Time to restart this blog. I haven't been keeping up with it. It's not that I forgot about it or that I have nothing to write. I've just been lazy. Forgive me, dear readers. You've all left me now.

So what brought me back? It's not school. Nah, high school couldn't motivate me to write. It's those thoughts swimming in my head as I head to bed every night. I've neglected them long enough. It's time to start putting them on "paper" again.

First thought - I'm out of touch. My sentences suck. I'm verbose. My writing has become coarse. I can't finish a thought.

Second thought - I don't want to read Emma. That's to say I really really really really really don't want to read Emma.

Third thought - It's great to be writing again. Can you believe some people think it's unnatural to like writing? Weird huh. It's also great to re-visit great writing. Here's to you Mr. J.D. Salinger, for your Nine Stories continually influences how I compose.

I'm tired. Goodnight!

Dark Knight Rises > HP7.5

Here's why:

1. Morgan Freeman. BEAT THAT!

2. I'm a selfish being. I get my wisdom teeth pulled the day before HP7.5 comes out. I can't go to any midnight parties/midnight premier. )=<

3. Bane is a badass.

4. Batman Begins and Dark Knight were both spectacular movies. Nolan won't disappoint.

5. Cast of DKR is incredible.

6. Nolan+All Star Cast will blow any HP movie out of the water

7. Most movies made from books have been worse, HP is no exception.

8. HP7 (the book) was relatively crappy compared to the rest of it. (Deathly Hollows felt like BS to me >_>.)

Quotes

From This Side of Paradise, running around in my brain.

" 'Watch my face, gentlemen, for the primitive emotions.'
He tore it open and held the slip up to the light.
'Well?'
'Pink or blue?'...
'Blue as the sky, gentlemen...' "

"If his reaction to his environment could be tabulated, the chart would have appeared like this, beginning with his earliest years:
1. The fundamental Amory
2. Amory plus Beatrice.
3. Amory plus Beatrice plus Minneapolis.
Then St Regis's had pulled him to pieces and started him over again:
4. Amory plus St Regis's
5. Amory plus St Regis's plus Princeton
That had been his nearest approach to success through conformity. The fundamental Amory, idle, imaginative, rebellious, had been nearly snowed under. He had conformed, he had succeeded, but as his imagination was neither satisfied nor grasped by his own success, he had listlessly, half-accidentally chucked the whole thing and become again:
6. The fundamental Amory. "

" ' I'm a romantic; a sentimental person thinks things will last, a romantic person hopes against hope that they won't."

"He stretched out his arms to the crystalline, radiant sky.
'I know myself,' he cried, 'but that is all.' "

Man that was a good book. Props, Fitzgerald, props.

Jungle Book

It came out of the woods. I saw him and opened my arms. I walked forward assuredly.

We were siblings (because I'm not a sexist.)

We go foraging for huckleberries. We might even find a Finn. Their tangy sweetness pervades through our mouth, palpitating our tastebuds. I wince. He laughs.

He beckons me forward (screw political correctness.) I follow on twos. Water glistens below the orange sky. It bends; it curves; it meanders. It drives forward, and clashing against the rock, creates white ripples amidst the flow.

He walks right in. We're carnivores now. A smack! A splash! Out flies a trout.

He teaches. I fail. His patience holds until the technique passes to me. I've learned to fish.

We lie on the ground staring into the starry sky. There's Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. He roars.

One, two, three, four... one thousand, one thousand and one, one thousand...

The sun rises and blinds my eyes. I shake his paw, and we say our goodbyes. I head back into the jungle.

Into the Mountain Range.

Written on June 26th:

We went into Wyoming and Montana today, but first, we saw Mount Rushmore. It was disappointing. We saw 4 heads from a distance, and that was it. I wanted to be closer and maybe a longer trail. Meh.

DSC_1421DSC_1427

What followed was a 10 hour road trip. God that was long. We had to stop by McDonalds for lunch, and I ate a crapload of chips. So unhealthy. Luckily we bought some baby carrots, apples, peaches, and grapes. :3

Along the way, we almost ran out of fuel. As in, the low fuel icon came on and we were freaking out. There are like, NO gas stations before Rapid City (??? Idk where we stopped really). So we drove like 20 miles, with roadwork, at 30-60 mph (due to stupid cars ahead of us.) We turned off the AC, unplugged the GPS, and even turned off the radio. People were wondering what to do if we ran out of gas. Luckily it didn’t happen. That sure woke us up. Freaking risks. :P

We made it into the mountains relatively cleanly. The views, my god! Pine trees  carpeted the mountainous inclines; snow draped the peaks; sunlight glistened off ice crystals; chasms plunged off the sides. White, blue, green, brown. Each crisp and vivid contrasting against the others. See what I mean.

DSC_1497DSC_1498DSC_1499DSC_1501DSC_1502DSC_1507DSC_1488DSC_1494DSC_1495

Aside from that, I thought a lot during the car ride. It’s what reading does to you. Speaking of which, I finished The Other Side of Paradise. Great book. I like Fitzgerald. Next up, Hemingway’s In Our Time.

Into the Badlands

Written on June 25th:

First day of roadtripping with the family. Spent like 5 hours in the car, minimum. My legs died.
Fitzgerald kept me good company. Amory Blaine, what a character. Literate, successful, charming, and Princetonian. I wish I were like him. The book put me into a pensive mood. The fundamental Amory… when will I know the fundamental me?
We visited Badlands National Park. Its beauty astonished me. See for yourself.

We went to Wall Drugs after that. Shout out to Sami Meyer for the suggestion. Great suggestion. :) We ate dinner there. I had a Buffalo Burger. Tasted like any other old burger. Walked around, looked through the stores, saw some awesome knives, bought nothing. Then had some ice cream. The ice cream was good, better than anything I’ve had in Minnesota. The milk flavor really came through, and while sweet, it wasn’t too sweet. Newtown, CT has better ice cream though. Newtown Creamery, go if you ever get the chance.
We finished the trip by driving to our hotel in a torrential thunderstorm. My dad managed to snipe this pic before that though. I really like it.

Pandora's Box

Last Friday, Pandora's box was opened for me. No, it's not that I discovered Pandora Radio (pshhhhh, discovered it long ago man.) It's that I found Uptown! :D

Following X-Men: First Class, Anisha and Leona took Ivan, Ish, and I to explore Uptown. We had quite a time getting there, with Ivan and Anisha fighting about directions for a little bit, but we got there. :p Eventually.

So we parked at McDonalds and walked to Cheapos. It started to rain a bit. Not too heavy, but not a drizzle either. I cracked some jokes to Ish about El Cheapos. Lame jokes. Real lame.

Cheapos is pretty big. They have a HUGE collection of music. Just... not Asian music. See, I was searching for Kpop, but they only had pop on records. You know, like those 45 rpm old school style vinyls. Meh, back to international, modern rock, and rap I guess.

Oh, they also had a ton of DVDs. I saw Yu-gi-oh DVDs there. ^_^ Like, the really old episodes from back when it was Yugi on that island trying to get to Pegasus. 2000 life points, crazy rules I never understood, yeah. Good times.

We left Cheapos without buying a thing (LOL CHEAPOS.) We walked to Sushi Tango in the rain. Ish described the feeling best. It was like Europe. I love Europe. Maybe that's why I love Uptown. Anyway, it kinda felt like this picture (I'll spare you some words)

Sushi Tango was nice. It was really... hipster and chic though. Nothing wrong with that, except wow, the bowls used for serving noodles were ridiculous. Oh, and I didn't bring enough money. I fail. The sushi was quite good. Ivan seemed to enjoy his Sashimi. I think the Tempura was a bit heavy though. Maybe too focused on the batter and frying instead of on the ingredients. Just what it looked like to me.

That's Tempura

It was a pretty fun night. I'd definitely go again. I'm looking forward to it. ^_^

Taking up the Mantle

We're seniors tomorrow. I can't tell if I'm sad or shocked. God damn sentimentality. Congratulations are in order, but all I can think about is the past, about how 3 years have gone by, and about how my friends are leaving me yet again.
"Stop!" cries my heart, "Stop!" I hate time.
"Stand still." I say, "Stand still!" Who am I to request that?
I smile not because I'm happy, but because it makes me happy. If I keep smiling, will time slow down? Will the seniors stay another day? Another year?
No, that would be cruel, unjust, despicable. Let them soar.
Here's my goodbye seniors.

Julia - It's been awesome knowing you. Three years of Mock Trial, definitely changed my high school experience. Take MIT by storm. I know you can. I'll just try to hold up without your leadership. :)

Lewin - Despite the Jane Austen love (lol, I kid, Jane Austen's pretty good), you're still amazing. Easily one of the best basketball players out of the Asians. :p You're a genius. Lit, Math, Science, you excel in everything. Harvard's lucky to have you.

Lawrence - Boss. Thanks for all the advice and insider knowledge you've given me throughout the years. Talks on the bus? Most useful things ever. Cal-tech is crazy, but you'll handle it just fine. Whenever you dedicate yourself to something, you're good as hell at it. Take high school, take HMC/research, take weight-lifting, take parkour. Too Boss.

Amy - I can't believe I only met you in my sophomore year. Really? Really? Hahaha, it was always fun hanging out with you. Sorry I couldn't write a paragraph in your yearbook. I just couldn't find space. >_< My handwriting needs to be smaller. It's always great to talk with you because you're so happy and pensive (weird mix of words?). Talking in Chinese is especially fun (after party? :D). It's been great knowing you.

Kelley - It's been great hanging around you. ^_^ Every party with you (without SC) has been a blast. :D You're carefree but also serious when need be and incredibly smart. I know you're going to go through a 6 year program, but after beating out competition for Wayzata's math team? Psh, peace of cake for you. On an ending note, keep playing Pokemon. It's amazing like you.

Larry - Gaming club is amazing. SCing with you is always fun. We should play more over the summer. ^_^ We should talk more strategy. You should watch Jaedong. :D Larry, you've always amazed me, both in your genius and your innocence. Although, sometimes I realize you're just kidding around. Hahaha. Have fun in college.

Gabi - I wish we had a class together this year. :( Too bad. Still! SO was great, and we got to hang out there. SO was always fun with you. Picture This practices, Boyceville, and bus ride back from State this year. Good times.

Brian - You're a really awesome guy. Chill, relaxed, funny, and smart. Princeton seems to fit. Lunch with you was really fun. Your jokes were always hilarious and devastating. Hope you did well in Brit Lit, hahaha.

Gaurav - Sci Bowl, SO, Math Team, Starcraft, you were good at them all. I loved being in Sci-Bowl with you, especially during the Regional/State tournament. You get so hyped, hahaha, and it's really amazing seeing you guys win this year. ^_^ I remember playing Team Melee as T with you. That game was hella fun. We need to play again sometime. :)

Rohit - Hanging out with you was fun whenever it occurred. Playing games like Mau, SC, and Mafia was great. So was learning about Abstract Algebra (although comprehending it? Oh man, lol). You're a tier above me in intellect (probably 5), but you never show it. MIT will be easy for you.

Anisha - OH CRAP! I realized I won't be there this Saturday cuz of SATs. Maybe next Saturday. :D We gotta order pizza then. Well, knowing you through Methodist was great. :) You really brightened up my shift. Without you and Arsalan there, I would probably be bored out of my mind there. You were also a hilarious person to hang around because you're just so silly sometimes. xD Hahaha. Thanks for all the college advice. Especially for teaching Arsalan and I about our stupidity. I hope I actually remember it, hahaha.

Leona - I wish I knew you better. I feel like the lunch experience wasn't enough. :P You seem to have brains, humor, and style. Your reactions at lunch always make me smile. :) You also know French, which is just an awesome language.

Richard - Playing sports with you is fun. Partially because you're really competitive, making it all the more fun. Partially because you can stand my horrible play. You're too good at B-ball man. xD Too good! We should play more in the summer. :D Teach me to shoot?

Abe - Lunch with you has been fun. :D Seeing you vid-sniping and interacting with Lawrence. Of course, I'll always remember the library incident with Mrs. Cameron. Hahaha.

Zhu - I've known you since 9th grade right? Melee man, Melee. That's always been fun, hahaha. Hanging out at your house was awesome. Definitely an epic weekend. :P We should Melee more often. You're a beast with Falco. Have fun in college. I know you'll love it.

It's time for us to take up the mantle isn't it? Haha, with all that nostalgia coursing through my veins, I don't think I'm quite ready. It's intimidating to see what you've accomplished, to imagine school without you guys.

To hell with it; we'll grab it anyway to free you from that burden. Have fun, fly, soar, accomplish your dreams, cure cancer, become billionaires, turn the world upside down, but most of all, congratulations.

Sneak peak.

Summer's starting up, but school's not done yet. I think this weekend has been a sneak peak into my summer. It was freaking amazing.

Friday - Nothing spectacular. Last day at the Fed. :( Kinda sad about that. But hey, I figure it's that time for anime characters to go into a hyperbolic time chamber and come out with new techniques and stuff. Summer will be my training time. Study up, study up! Went to the Twins game too. Left by the 5th inning. Too cold. Did they win? I never found out.

It was about this size

Saturday - Possibly best day of the weekend? Fishing in the morning with Bradley's Dad, Bradley, and Naveen. It was awesome. ^_^ I even caught a fish (a Sunny at that lol.) Thanks Bradley for taking me fishing. I hope we can do it more often. :D If only I wasn't so helpless in untangling fishing rods. Hahaha. I have to admit, Bradley was really patient throughout, always helping Nav and I change lures and stuff. Also sitting through Naveen and I catch everything and everyone on the boat. Yeah... :p Then volunteered at methodist with Arsalan (who's awesome.) Then played SC with Ivan, Evan, Oli, Partha and Ishmam. SC BROS FTW! Oli and I make a great team :p. Cheese ftw? I think so, lol.

Om nom nom!

Sunday - 2 hours of basketball, then hanging out at Zhus. Played more basketball, watched Hangover II, tried to learn tricking and failed, but had a helluva time. Only bad part was the completely sore muscles afterwards.

Monday - Felt like an extension of Sunday. Took a nap. Worked on proposal. Felt like shit. Didn't even SC. Kinda regret not going to the math team party now, lol.

Today - Another round of basketball. This time with Lewin, Richard, Lawrence, and Chris. God I suck at shooting. If I can get my shot to actually go IN, I might actually be decent. Lewin is a BEAST on defense. Cannot get past the man. Richard is a great player overall, defensively and offensively. His ball handling skills are good, and his jump shots destroyed us. Lawrence on a good day is like Dirk Nowitzki. CAN'T STOP THAT FADEAWAY!

Oh by the way? Mavs in six. Watch out Heats.

Hope the summer includes as much fun and basketball. ^_^ Now... just gotta finish that proposal. Ugh. Revisions suck when the audience changes.

Snow

The man gazed into the snow.
"So pristine, so beautiful" he observed.
"You can always come back," stated the woman.
"No," he replied. He took another puff, "I can't."
He dropped the cigarette. One last glance. He walked into the unknown.

It's all in the walk

I'll walk with my head down, my back hunched, and my step low. I'll drag each step a tiny bit, barely letting my shoes brush the ground. I walked into school today, but I'm not always in the mood to walk.

So I'll saunter around back straight and head back, enjoying the sun outdoors. I close my eyes. The bright rays of warmth and joy create an ocean of red. Inhale. Exhale. Smile. I sauntered to my bus today, but I'm not always in the mood to saunter.

So I'll pace with quick, short steps that clap tappity tap against the muffling carpet floor. Back and forth across an interval of five meters, no more, no less, reciting lines and repeating phrases. I pace before competitions, but I'm not always in the mood to pace.

So I'll strut, head high, steps long, and shoulders broad. Arrogance radiates in this style accomplished only with the help of a suit, tie, and black pants and black shoes. I'm not always in the mood to strut, but hey, there are many more ways to "walk." It's all about the walk.

A stormy day

“Hey,” she said.
“Hey,” he said, holding the umbrella over her. “You look beautiful. Want to dance?”
The wind howled, nearly blowing the umbrella out of his hand. The storm kept on beating.
“Don’t kid,” she answered. “Come on. Let’s go inside.”
“Why? Don‘t you like it?”
Lightning cracked open the sky letting loose a torrent of rain.
“Haha. Yeah, I love it, so much. Come on, let’s go."
“Why? You cold?”
“N…”
Sleet pounded the earth.
“Let’s go inside. Everyone’s waiting.”

Excitement

It's weird, but after all of Motes's teachings, I'm EXCITED for the AP comp test. I'm scared, yes; I still suck at writing, yes; I could very well fail, yes. I'm excited.

The first test tomorrow. The second to last test AP test of the year. First three hours before my freedom. Last three hours before a test I never learned.

Part of me wants to show off on this test, to prove to myself that I've grown. Rhetorical Analysis, Open Essay, Synthesis, all achievable. Taught to me, no, absorbed by me in that classroom where Motes exudes his knowledge everyday. Osmosis man, osmosis.

I'm a coward. Rhetorical Analysis is frightening. I just can't find enough. Motes always taught evidence. Check. Recheck. I can't do that. Observations, yes. Inferences, evidence, checks, and rechecks? No. I'm a failure.

But then I read something like Salinger, Maugham, Nabokov. I see those tools at work. I predict something about the tone. It happens. Nah, cowardice is the last thing I need.

Tonight, I'll just visit some friends. Barrons and PR. They make good companions. Just hope I don't fall asleep before 10:00.
